Well, I never really thought that a butterfly can look good in black and white. They usually colourful, and associated with colours, even recognite their species often needs colours. This is the most important forte of this image. Colours are gone, so the observer faces forms and surfaces, textures and shades. It turns out that a butterfly had them, too—even very pretty forms (see the wings' curves) and surfaces (look those antennae or how'dya call'em). The shades are obvious generally, but here we can spot (pun intended) that there are spots on legs, and even on the eyes. I am sure that one would never find it on a colour shot.

As for the image, it is more than a butterfly. This little creature is in the centre of the scope, it has all sharpness and even exposition was determined by its needs, but there is an interesting shaped leaf to stand on, and more in hte backdrop. All the "unnecessary details" serving as background has nice washed look, and the grades of bokeh shows that it was a well selection of aperture and timing. The butterfly is pinsharp due to the relatively narrow aperture, and the full frame camera brought possible to present this lovely soft scene behind. (For wider apertures and faster shutter speeds, the depth of field would be very low, and even the butterfly would be partially blurred.) Note, that these parameters would be unavailable on a cropped frame camera.

The overall composition is following classic style, rules of third, plenty of "air" in front of, and over the theme, Though the butterfly and the background has high contrast elements, they are not competing because of the nice distribution, well mastered DoF and grandious post-processing. The image is brightly clear but not because over-exposition, but the brilliant BW-conversion. The dark parts are silky smooth, and not really apparent that very small area has true black surfaces. It makes the image full of cheerful light, giving warm feelings to the observer. The square crop is a bit dangerous, easy to miss the attraction with that, and turn composition to dull sullen mess by calling for centered structure, but here everything is on its place. Only the watermark is disturbing, I'd like it better a bit off a main theme, or faded a bit, but all we know that it is necessary, especially the fabulous images.

Thank you for posting it!
